San Tan Justice Court

Quick answer

San Tan Justice Court operates from the Chandler court building at 201 E. Chicago St., Chandler, AZ 85225, telephone (602) 372-3400, fax (602) 372-3441. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding court holidays, as published by the Maricopa County Justice Courts. The court hears eviction, small claims, and limited civil matters for its precinct. The precinct determines where a case is filed, not where papers may be served. Fast Serve AZ is an independent process-serving company, not the court.

San Tan Justice Court is one of 26 Justice Court precincts in Maricopa County and one of four operating from the Chandler courthouse. The court's address is in Chandler, but that is where the building is, not a statement about which addresses fall inside the precinct.

Precinct boundaries in this part of the county are frequently mistaken for city limits, because the southeast Valley's city boundaries and justice precincts both cut across the same fast-growing area. They are drawn by different bodies for different purposes and do not match. Filing based on a city name rather than the precinct map is a common and costly error.

One Building in Chandler, Four Precincts

The courthouse at 201 E. Chicago St. houses Kyrene, San Marcos, San Tan, and University Lakes Justice Courts. They share an address and a main telephone number, but each is a separate court with a separate precinct, its own judge, and its own case files.

Because the general number reaches all four, a phone call does not confirm you have reached the right court. Confirm the precinct from the address first, then call, and name the precinct you are asking about.

Venue and Service Are Separate Questions

Where the case is filed. Under A.R.S. § 22-202, a person generally may not be sued outside the justice precinct where they reside, subject to the statute's exceptions. That rule decides whether a case belongs in San Tan, Kyrene, San Marcos, University Lakes, or another precinct entirely.

Where service may be performed. Venue does not restrict where the papers are delivered. Justice Court Rule 113 allows service on an individual in Arizona by personal delivery, by delivery at the defendant's dwelling or usual place of abode to a resident of suitable age and discretion, or by delivery to an authorized agent. Service may occur anywhere in Arizona the defendant can lawfully be served.

What must be proved. Rule 113 also sets out proof of service and the consequence of failing to serve in time. The affidavit is tied to the case, so it must name the correct precinct court, even though the service attempt itself happened somewhere else.

The San Tan precinct decides the court file. The defendant's address decides where the attempt occurs. Those are usually two different places.

Confirming the Precinct Before You File

Use the county's interactive lookup for the specific address rather than inferring the precinct from a city name or ZIP code. The tool returns the precinct responsible for that location and is the authoritative check.

Allow extra care for anything filed after 2026. Maricopa County is scheduled to adjust several Justice Court precinct boundaries in 2027 and to open a new precinct, so an address's precinct may change. For a matter that will be pending across that date, verify the boundary when you file and again before relying on it in a later step.

Cases Commonly Filed Here

San Tan Justice Court handles limited-jurisdiction matters, including:

  • Eviction actions and forcible detainer proceedings
  • Small claims lawsuits
  • Civil disputes within the Justice Court limit
  • Debt collection and contract claims
  • Subpoenas and court appearance orders

In each case the matter cannot proceed until service is complete and the proof of service is in the file. Eviction calendars move quickly, and a failed attempt is usually measured in days of delay rather than hours.

Serving Papers for This Precinct

The southeast Valley combines new subdivisions, active rental communities, gated neighborhoods, and rural parcels at the edge of the metro area. Addresses in this part of the county are sometimes ambiguous: the same road name crosses more than one jurisdiction, and new construction can postdate what a database returns.

That makes address verification part of the work rather than an assumption. An attempt at the wrong address is not service, and it should not be documented as though it were. Where the address is uncertain, the affidavit should reflect what was actually verified and what was attempted.
