Tempe is compact but densely populated, organized around Arizona State University, Tempe Town Lake and the Mill Avenue corridor. Filings move through Maricopa County Superior Court or the Kyrene and University Lakes justice precincts, which also cover parts of the surrounding East Valley.
Student housing, short-term rentals and roommate situations make recipient identification the hardest part of a Tempe serve. Attempts are timed around class and work schedules rather than standard business hours.

Corporate service at a registered agent office in Tempe
A national registered-agent office operates in south Tempe, at 7955 S. Priest Dr. When the defendant is a company that has appointed that office as its statutory agent, the serve is made on the entity through the appointment — a different assignment from serving a person at a home or a workplace, and one that fails for entirely different reasons.
Why this differs from a residential serve. A corporate assignment is not a residential attempt at a business address. There is no round of attempts at different times of day to run: the recipient is an office, the window is its business hours, and the outcome turns on whether the entity name is exact, the appointment is current and the papers are complete. A residential serve is judged by whether the right person was reached; this one is judged by whether the entity and the authorization were right.

Corporation Service Company
Accepts only for entities that have appointed this office as their agent of record
A commercial registered-agent office in south Tempe. A company that appoints this office appoints it to receive legal process on the company’s behalf in Arizona, so an assignment here is service on the entity — not on a person who happens to work in the building, and not a general intake desk for every company doing business in the state.
- Statutory-agent verification
- A directory listing shows the office exists; it does not show that the defendant appointed it. The defendant’s exact legal entity name and its current statutory agent of record are read from that entity’s own Arizona Corporation Commission filing before anything is dispatched, because a company can change agents and the appointment in the papers can be out of date.
- Authorized recipients
- Under the Arizona rules a corporation is served through an officer, a managing or general agent, or an agent authorized by appointment or by law to receive service. At a registered-agent office the authorized recipient is the agent appointed by that entity. Someone behind the counter is not authorized to accept for every company served from that address, so delivery to any employee is not valid on its own.
- Designation and notice
- CSC’s own published guidance states that a company designating it as registered agent must notify a CSC representative directly, and that failing to do so can delay delivery of legal documents. A designation filed with the state is therefore not the same as the office expecting the papers; the appointment and the office’s own instructions are both checked before an attempt.
- Document preparation
- The papers name the defendant exactly as registered, matching the caption in the court filing; a trade name, a brand or an abbreviation on an invoice does not identify a party. Complete sets are assembled before the trip, because an incomplete set can be declined and the attempt lost.
- Delivery conditions
- Acceptance is not automatic and is not promised. The office may decline papers for a company it does not represent, or an incomplete set. Its current hours, entrance and suite access are confirmed with the office for the assignment at hand rather than assumed from a listing, and a refusal is reported as a refusal, never recorded as service.
- Sworn documentation
- The affidavit states the entity served by exact legal name, the capacity of the person who accepted, the date and time, the office address and the method used. A return naming a counter employee with no stated capacity is the easiest one for the other side to attack.
Entity versus individual. Service on a government body goes to the entity through the office or agent designated for service. Service on a named employee goes to that person. Papers naming both may require two separate serves.
Access is not service. Getting inside a facility, or leaving papers with a lobby desk, does not by itself complete service on the person held there. The affidavit has to state who was served and in what capacity.
Corporations and agencies. For a company, the statutory agent of record is confirmed before service; for a government agency, the designated service office is confirmed. A name on letterhead is not proof of either.
Five things that are not interchangeable
- Physical delivery location — the address the papers physically go to.
- Legal recipient — the person or entity the law requires to receive them.
- Issuing court — the court whose rules and deadlines govern the case.
- Authorized method — what the applicable rule permits for that party and that court.
- Access requirement — what the building allows a server to reach on the day.
Getting one of these right does not satisfy the others. A correct address delivered to the wrong recipient, or to the right recipient by a method the rule does not allow, is not service — which is why each is confirmed separately rather than inferred from the others.
Before an assignment is dispatched
- Verify the defendant’s exact legal entity name as registered — not a trade name, a brand or an abbreviation from an invoice.
- Verify the current statutory-agent appointment in that entity’s own Arizona Corporation Commission record, and that the appointment is current.
- Confirm the applicable service rule and the authorized method for that court and that entity before anything is dispatched.
- Verify the office address and its current delivery conditions with the office itself for that assignment.
- Record the actual recipient, that person’s capacity, the time, the location and the method used.
- Prepare the sworn affidavit so it reflects the outcome, including a refusal or a non-acceptance where that is what happened.
These offices do not accept process for every company, and none of the steps above is skipped because an address looks familiar.

Service of process during spring training in Tempe
Tempe Diablo Stadium is the Cactus League home of the Los Angeles Angels, in south Tempe at the base of the twin buttes. Tempe is also where our corporate and statutory-agent work concentrates, and a spring-training assignment here is handled as a separate matter from a corporate serve.

City of Tempe; the Angels play there under contract
Los Angeles Angels
- What changes here
- One club, one ballpark, in south Tempe at the base of the twin buttes. The Angels have trained here since 1993, and the site is compact enough that the stadium, the berm and the adjoining practice area sit within a short walk of one another.
- Club administration
- The stadium is a city facility and the club operates its own baseball side, so the club speaks to a person’s schedule while the city speaks to the site. One club also means one baseball administration to coordinate with, which makes Tempe the least ambiguous spring-training facility in the Valley to approach.
- Venue access
- The ballpark sits near the I-10 and US-60 interchange and about ten minutes from Sky Harbor, which makes arrivals and departures plausible at almost any hour. That proximity is why timing is confirmed with the club rather than improvised from a flight or a freeway.
What this city adds to a spring-training assignment
- •One club means one baseball administration to coordinate with, which makes Tempe the least ambiguous of the ten ballparks to approach about a person.
- •The site is compact — stadium, berm and adjoining practice area sit together — so a person described as “at Diablo” is confirmed with the club rather than assumed to be in the stadium bowl.
- •The ballpark is near the I-10 and US-60 interchange and about ten minutes from Sky Harbor. That proximity makes arrivals and departures plausible at most hours, which is why timing is confirmed instead of improvised.
- •A registered-agent serve on Priest Drive and a spring-training attempt on Alameda Drive are not interchangeable. They are quoted, scheduled and documented separately, and one does not stand in for the other.
Administration is not authorization
A club’s staff, a stadium office and a league office can each describe a person’s schedule and still have no authority to accept service for that person. Access to a facility is not service, and a person’s employer is not automatically that person’s agent for receiving papers. The affidavit records who was served and in what capacity, because that is what the court reads.
